I was going through some Google+ posts at my previous office (eSewa) as Facebook was restricted during office hours then suddenly I came across a post. It was a cartoon post of people at beach like girls, boys, man, women and children enjoying the sunshine and playing at the beach.
There was a SQL query at the top of the picture which was “SELECT * FROM beach WHERE gender=”FEMALE” and age BETWEEN 18 AND 25“. Probably it was one of the funniest posts I have seen related to IT. I was laughing at it then suddenly my mind was triggered by the thought that why not use the same concept for collecting and sorting out information of students of our college? Like let’s find out the total number of boys or girls at our college, finding, their details, their contacts, their info, social media profiles AT A CLICK!
“That would be awesome”, I thought. I was sure there were people who wanted to know other people without even knowing them. I thought this would be awesome idea to implement and work out. That night, I sat down and started collecting the raw data of the students including student id, name, address, phone numbers, current year, semesters, Email, Facebook profile links and many other info. It took me around 15 days to collect information and make a prototype of the app. I wrote the whole system in HTML and PHP. I was not so good at designing but bootstrap made the work very easier and now I am a great fan of it. I just love BOOTSTRAP!.
After working for many days, I finally made the apk version of the app. I didn’t upload the app at Google Play store as it was only usable to our college so eventually the app was limited. I then shared the app with few of my friends to get some feedback and the results were as expected. They were surprised to see the info of their and other students of our college in an app and was looking forward for the final version of the app. Students started taking my apk build from me and slowly the whole college knew about it. Everyone started talking about the app and over a small period of time it was already on 50% students device. I was and am really sorry to the iOS users as the app is not available on the iOS devices.
I was really happy to see that my app was making things bit more easier for people. As the app was designed in such a way that it saved all the search query in the database table, like if someone searched “Naresh” then automatically before getting my details, it saves the search word “Naresh” in the system to make a record of it. Then another idea came into my mind, why not use the recorded query to find out the most searched person of college. That was somehow interesting idea to work out.
Then I started making the “Top search of the week” section and updated the name of the top searched person every Sunday. This was even more interesting to the students as they were really interesting to see the top searched person every week. Every week, girls were on the top list as student used to search girls info.
And the app still goes on.
It’s Nov 5, 2016 today and I have again planned to make some changes in the app and I have added some more features. Previously none of the student were about to edit their details but now I have allowed them to add their profile details by themselves (Making my own work lot easier and wiser).
So, it’s my final year at college. I really want to do something amazing at the end of the year so I googled “way to make the most of your final year in college” and then hit one of the link. (Link Here). It has some amazing stuff listed that you can do at your final year. Anyways, keeping the link’s list in the mind, I now want to do something even more amazing, experience new things in life, try on some new cool stuffs and sign up for things that may sound completely crazy because hey if you don’t do it now then when? I wish that when I look back in future, I could say “YES! I have lived my life to the fullest and am very happy with all the decisions that I have made and the chances that I took!”
